How to Put On Cleanroom Gloves Without Contaminating Them

A clean glove can be contaminated in the few seconds it takes to put it on. A simple routine prevents it.

A clean glove can be contaminated in the few seconds it takes to put it on. Bare skin is the main source of particles and oils in a cleanroom, so the aim is simple: bare hands never touch the outside of the glove.

Before you start

  • Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
  • Put on your cleanroom garment first. Gloves usually go on last.
  • Open the glove bag inside the gowning area, not outside it.

Putting the gloves on

  1. Take the first glove by the cuff only. Do not touch the fingers or palm.
  2. Slide your hand in while holding the cuff, and pull it up by the cuff.
  3. With the gloved hand, pick up the second glove. A gloved hand may touch the outside of the other glove.
  4. Pull each cuff over the sleeve of the garment so no skin is exposed. A 12 inch glove gives enough length to overlap the sleeve.

While you work

  • Do not touch your face, hair, phone or anything outside the clean area.
  • Change gloves if they tear, after touching a non-clean surface, and after each break.
  • Follow your site procedure for how often gloves are changed during a shift.

Taking them off

Peel the first glove off from the cuff so it turns inside out, hold it in the gloved hand, then slide a bare finger under the cuff of the second glove and peel it off over the first. Dispose of both.

Every site has its own gowning procedure; where it differs from the steps above, follow your site procedure.

Not sure which glove fits your process? Tell us your cleanroom class and we will recommend one, or see the full specification on the Products page.
